Words to number
Type a number in words and read it in digits. If a phrase could mean two things, the tool says so.
Hyphens, commas and the word “and” are all fine.
In digits
What it accepts
| Phrase | Why it works |
|---|---|
| one hundred and five | British, with the and |
| one hundred five | American, without it |
| twenty-one | hyphenated or spaced, either way |
| a thousand | a in place of one |
| twelve hundred | the informal form for 1,200 |
| negative forty-two | or minus forty-two |
| twenty-first | an ordinal, read as the place it names: 21 |
| three point one four | a decimal, read digit by digit |
| one thousand, one hundred and five | commas are ignored |
Ambiguous phrases
Each of these could mean more than one thing, so the tool explains the problem and gives no number.
| Phrase | The problem |
|---|---|
| nineteen eighty-four | A year, read as two numbers. |
| one twenty | It could be 120 or 1 and 20. |
| zero five | Two numbers. A leading zero is written in digits only. |
Spelling. A handful of common misspellings are read anyway (fourty for forty, ninty for ninety, hundered for hundred), and the tool tells you what it read them as.
