Everything on NumberQuill is provided for general reference. It is accurate as far as we can make it, and it is checked automatically before publication, but it carries no guarantee. If an answer matters, check it.

This is not accounting, banking or legal advice

The money tool writes an amount out in ordinary English. It does not tell you what your bank, your auditor, your insurer or the law where you live requires. Cheque wording, invoice wording and the form of words a contract needs are matters for the institution concerned or for a professional adviser. We make no representation that an amount written out by this site will be accepted by anybody.

Nothing on this site is a recommendation about money, a financial product or a transaction, and nothing here should be treated as one.

The words-and-figures checker says whether the words and the figures in a line agree, as this site reads them. A verdict that they agree is not an opinion that the document is valid, binding or accepted by anybody. The spreadsheet formula, VBA module and Apps Script on the amounts-in-words page are generated and tested here, but they have not been run in Excel or Google Sheets; check what they write before you rely on it.

This is not an educational authority

The reference pages explain the conventions in ordinary use. They are not a curriculum, a style guide or an examination board, and they do not tell you what any particular school, publisher or examiner expects. Where conventions differ — British and American English, the two meanings of “standard form”, the two readings of a decimal — the pages say so rather than choosing for you. Your teacher or your style guide is the authority for your work, not this site.

The conventions this site has chosen

Some answers depend on a convention, and where one had to be picked it is stated on the page that uses it. In summary:

• The short scale, where a billion is a thousand million. The long scale is explained but not offered.
• Standard modern Roman numerals, from I to MMMCMXCIX, with the six subtractive pairs. Older and inscriptional forms are read but not produced, and the overline is not used.
• British English by default, with American English one click away. Neither is presented as the correct form of the other.
• A maximum of thirty-six digits, because English has no agreed name for the next group of three.

The site may be unavailable, may change, and may stop. We do not undertake to keep any tool or any page in existence.

Limitation

To the fullest extent the law allows, we accept no liability for any loss arising from reliance on anything on this site. Nothing here excludes liability for gross negligence or fraud, or anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded, and if you are a consumer your local statutory rights are unaffected.
