How a denominator is named
The bottom number is read as an ordinal (fifths, eighths, twentieths), with two exceptions that have names of their own. Two is a half, and in British English four is a quarter. American English often does say fourths, and both are in ordinary use.
The top number decides the plural: one fifth, but two fifths. A mixed number joins the two with “and”, as in two and one third, and one half in a mixed number is usually “and a half”.
